New scout group starts in Craigavon

And they have made a call for more leaders due to the numbers of children wanted to join up.

The Scouts have been running in Craigavon for over 35 years.

Though it started as a boys-only organisation it has developed for both boys and girls.

Initially it was part of Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland which changed to Catholic Scouts of Ireland.

After it amalgamated with The Scout Association of Ireland it became Scouting Ireland and is the only 32 county scout association in the country.

It is open to children and adults regardless of creed, colour, race or religion.

The aim of Scouting is to encourage the physical, intellectual, character, emotional, social, and spiritual development of young people so that they may achieve their full potential and, as responsible citizens, to improve society.

Although scouts run for young people from six to 18 years old the Scouts in Craigavon take young from six to 16. There are three sections beavers, cubs and scouts.

“We are completely run by volunteers. Our youth and adults are made up from male and females from right across the community,” said a spokeswoman.

“We meet in the scout den which is located at the bottom of the car park behind St Anthonys Hall, in Craigavon.”

A Registration and Information Night will be held on Monday 14th at 7.30pm in the scout den.

Places are limited due to a shortage of leaders, but new leaders are welcome.

Beavers will run on Monday evenings 6.45pm-8pm,

Cubs will run on Thursday evenings 7pm-8.30pm

Scouts will be on Sunday evenings 7pm-9pm
