NRC hosts Inter Campus Skillbuild

The Northern Regional College in partnership with Skillbuild NI has held a series of one day College Inter Campus Competitions.

The competition, which was organised by the Faculty of Building, Engineering and Science within NRC, is designed to test and challenge the ability of its students/apprentices working in the construction trades. Students across the college from the Coleraine, Ballymoney, Ballymena, Magherafelt and Newtownabbey Campuses all participated in the Skillbuild event.

The winners, who will qualify from the Inter Campus Competitions, will then represent the college and compete at the annual Skillbuild NI Regional finals in March, which will be hosted this year, by NRC.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony Ronnie Laverty, NRC Head of Faculty for Building, Engineering and Science stated that “We had an excellent cohort of students competing in these competitions this year and the standard was exceptional high.

“At NRC we recognise the importance of supporting young people in their chosen trades and as part of their training we encourage them

to participate in competitions.”

He added that “The Inter Campus Skillbuild competition gives the trainees the confidence to improve their own skills while providing them with the

opportunity to test their skills against their college peers. This year, students competed in Brickwork, Site Carpentry, Electrical Installation, Industrial Heating, Bench Joinery, Lead Sheetwork, Plastering and Drywalls Systems and the Plumbing trades. The success and hard work by both the students and staff was very evident throughout the competition and we look forward to the forthcoming Regional Skillbuild events.”
