Parliament Week at Leaney

To celebrate Parliament Week, which runs from 19th – 25th November, Councillor Mervyn Storey M.L.A. visited Leaney Primary School to talk to the School Council about his work.

Parliament Week is a national initiative that aims to help people engage with parliamentary democracy.

The council encourages children to voice their opinions, to be involved in constructive dialogue and to engage in the democratic process to facilitate the needs and concerns of their peers thus improving the school environment for everyone. The work of the School Council is ongoing and very much appreciated by everyone in Leaney Primary School.

Mr Storey spoke to the council about the N.I. Assembly and his work at Stormont as Chair of the Education Committee. He chatted at length about how the work of the Education Committee and the Assembly as a whole, affect the lives of children for the better.

The pupils were very interested to hear an insider’s view of government and took the opportunity to ask Mr Storey many questions about his role. Having heard about a typical busy day at Stormont, the council concluded that they would rather stay at school than swap with Mr Storey!

Mr Storey then presented all the members of the school council with a copy of ‘Parliament, Laws and You’, a guide to Parliament written for children.”
