Pupils from the Doagh Road school recently visited the company’s Abbey Retail Park store to complete the ‘Farm to Fork Trail’ – an initiative which gives children the opportunity to learn about foods and where they come from.

The P4 and 5 pupils visited the grocery, fresh produce and bakery departments, discovering different foods and learning about food production.

The children took part in various educational games and activities, created with the national curriculum in mind and with help and advice from teachers at their school.

The pupils also got the chance to do some and baking and received a goody bag and certificate each at the end of the trail.

As part of the Tesco Farm to Fork project, staff at the Newtownabbey store have also hosted Healthy Snack Days for hundreds of schoolchildren, parents and teachers, giving them a chance to sample a variety of fruits, vegetables, cheeses and breads. The store has also held a Sandwich Making Morning for local parents, offering them good ideas for preparing healthy and nutritious lunchtime snacks.

Backed by Diabetes UK, the Children’s Food Trust and the NFU amongst others, The Tesco Eat Happy Project is a major new food education programme that is committed to improving children’s relationship with food.

Tesco’s ambition is to give every primary school in the UK the opportunity to go on the Farm to Fork Trails and online field trips, to learn about where food comes from, and, through food, support learning across the wider curriculum.
