Schools get busy making art from waste

The students who are taking part in the RiverRidge Recycling ‘Make Art Not Waste’ School competition got a tour of the facility and picked up some tips on the everyday items that they could use for their project instead of throwing them in the bin.

The Loreto youngsters who alongside Year 8, 9 and 10 pupils from Ballymena, Ballymoney, Coleraine, Limavady, Londonderry, Magherafelt and Moyle, are busily preparing unique pieces of artwork, furniture or an accessory using recyclable products for the innovative competition, which closes on March 311 The competition is supported by the Department of the Environment’s Rethink Waste NI programme and is still open to enter – with a chance to win £500 for each school in the final, seven in total, and seven finalists will get a trip to the Eden Project in Cornwall. The overall winner will receive an iPad 2.

Eamon Doherty of RiverRidge Recycling, said, “It was great to welcome the pupils from Loreto College in Coleraine to the site and hear about the creative projects they are working on.

“I can’t wait to see the finished works of art and would like to encourage schools across the North West and North East to get in touch about entering. It’s never too early to learn about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling and we hope that this competition will help to instill that message in the local community.”
