St Brigid’s Prize Day

It has been a very busy and successful year for the school with strong academic performances in CEA End of Key Stage Assessments. The school’s Principal, Mr Malachy Conlon, congratulated the children for their academic performances this year and drew their parents’ attention to significant achievements in English, maths and ICT examinations.

The school’s Prize Day also celebrated the children’s spiritual, sporting, artistic and cultural achievements which is a strong feature of the ethos of St. Brigid’s Primary School.

Sporting achievement was recognised with presentations to the Foundation Stage Pupils [P1-2] for completing fun, group based sporting tasks and there were also medals for infant sprinting races.

The winners of Sport Day races in P3-7 were also presented with prizes as well as medals for soccer, hurling/camogie and netball teams who won their inter-school competitions. Individual excellence was recognised with Sports Day Champion shields presented to the top boy and girl in both Key Stage 1 and 2; Gaelic Games, Soccer and Netball Players of the Year as well as Endeavour, Circle Time, Achievement, Creative & Expressive and ICT individual pupil awards. A special handwriting trophy was presented by Mr Ciaran O’Loan who retires from the school at the end of this term after twenty nines years teaching in St. Brigid’s.

The school’s netball and soccer teams were recognised for their achievements with the netball team retaining the Dalriada Leavers’ Shield as well as representing the district at the Northern Ireland Primary Schools’ Netball Championship. In soccer the boys reached the semi-finals of the Doherty Cup while the school’s Principal also praised the rugby, hurling, swimming and camogie teams who competed in tournaments throughout the year.

Prize Day was also an opportunity for the school to reflect with the parents and pupils on the importance of religion in the life of the school. During the year the children have grown spiritually under the guidance of their teachers and Fr O’Brien with their preparation for First Confessions, Holy Communion and Confirmation.

Attendance certificates were presented too, with 25 children in the school achieving 100% attendance. For one year seven pupil this was a very special day because she had the distinction of attending every single day of her primary school career – 1295 consecutive days.

Mr Conlon concluded the ceremony by thanking the parents, staff and children of the school for their contribution to St. Brigid’s throughout the year. St. Brigid’s has enjoyed a successful year and with the final phases of the 0.7 million refurbishment programme nearing completion the school will be well placed to face the challenges of the future.
