St Brigid’s prize giving success

It has been a very busy year for the school, which started with a very successful school inspection report in September.

This strong performance was continued throughout the year and reflected in CEA End of Key Stage Assessments which were ahead of national averages in literacy, numeracy and ICT.

The school’s Principal, Mr Malachy Conlon, congratulated the children for their academic performances this year and drew their parents’ attention to the wonderful comments the inspectors made about the children’s high levels of numeracy and literacy, very strong organisational skills and the excellent relationships they have with staff and each other.

The school’s Prize Day also celebrated the children’s spiritual, sporting, artistic and cultural achievements, which is a strong feature of the ethos of St. Brigid’s Primary School.

Sporting achievement was recognised with presentations to the Foundation Stage Pupils [P1-2] for completing fun, group based sporting tasks. The winners of Sport Day races in P3-7 were also presented with prizes as well as medals for soccer, hurling/camogie and netball teams who won their inter-school competitions. Individual excellence was recognised with Sports Day Champion shields presented to the top boy and girl in both Key Stage 1 and 2; Gaelic Games, Soccer and Netball Players of the Year as well as Endeavour, Circle Time, Achievement, Creative & Expressive, Handwriting and ICT individual pupil awards. A special Science trophy was presented to St. Brigid’s by retired school secretary Betty Scott. Science is a very significant part of the school’s curriculum and the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics [STEM] subjects is a major School Development Plan priority.

The netball, hockey and soccer teams were recognised for their achievements. In netball and hockey the girls won their regional competitions before proceeding to the last eight of the NI Primary Schools’ Championships in both sports. In football the boys reached the final of the Doherty Shield. The sporting achievements of the children were recognised by Oran Kearney [Coleraine manager] who presented awards to the teams and to individual sports persons of the year in football, netball and Gaelic games. Mr Conlon thanked Oran for taking the time to return to his old primary school to help celebrate the children’s achievements.

Prize Day was also an opportunity to reflect with the parents and pupils on the importance of religion in the life of the school. During the year the children have grown spiritually under the guidance of their teachers and Fr O’Brien with their preparation for First Confessions, Holy Communion and Confirmation.

Mr Conlon concluded the ceremony by thanking the parents, staff and children of the school for their contribution to St. Brigid’s throughout the year. St. Brigid’s has enjoyed a successful year and the inspectorate recognises that this school is extremely well placed to meet the challenges of the future.
