A spokesperson for the school said: “St Killian’s students who have recently received AS and A level results are to be congratulated in an unprecedented year of school closures, remote learning and cancelled examinations.

“The success of our students is a reflection of their hard work, dedication and maturity together with the expertise, effort and enthusiasm of the teaching and support staff. Once again, this year’s outcomes highlight the fact that non-selective education continues to deliver excellent results for all.

“We are incredibly proud of our students. This has been an extremely challenging year for all students and the significant disruption to education has been felt most keenly by those who should have taken their final exams this summer.

“Our school has a strong track record of academic excellence, and this year, despite the difficulties faced, is no different. Our students have achieved incredibly well across AS and A level and we are confident that they will continue to do so next year and beyond.”

The spokesperson added: “We are disappointed that the school year came to such an abrupt end and stopped students experiencing some of the key moments in their education. However, we are amazed by the resilience and perseverance shown by our students in very challenging circumstances.

“We also recognise the anxiety caused by the events of the past few months, weeks and days and thank our parents and carers for their continued support. We understand that the rapidly changing information surrounding examination results has caused uncertainty and anxiety and for that we are sorry.

“We are now confident that students have achieved the exam results they deserve based on validity and integrity.

“A level results were very pleasing. The high grades attained not only reflect the ability of our students but also provide them with the currency that has opened up doors to exciting and challenging university places or other third level courses. We are pleased that with the help, advice and guidance of the college’s career department, the vast majority of our students have gained entry to their first choice courses while others have taken advantage of much sought after apprenticeships in a variety of professions.

“At A level, 87 per cent of St Killian’s students achieved A*-C grades with 52 per cent achieving A*-A grade and 82 per cent A to B grades.11 students achieved at least three A grades.

“The top performer was Stephen Emerson with three A*’s in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Stephen will now progress to QUB to study Structural Engineering with Architecture.”
