St Michael’s scoops major Euro funding

The Lurgan school is to receive the money for its project entitled Innovative Digital European Active Learning.

Education minister John O’Dowd congratulated all the local institutions who shared in a €425,000 windfall for European education projects here.

Indeed 14 local education institutions will share the cash which aims to encourage participation in language, culture and STEM related projects with schools across the EU.

St Michael’s is one of five post primary schools to be successful in applying to Erasmus+, the EU’s flagship programme for education, training, youth and sport.

Congratulating the local organisations successful under the scheme, the Minister said: “Erasmus+ offers children, young people and their teachers fantastic opportunities to share knowledge and experiences with their counterparts across Europe.

“Local institutions will link up with schools in countries across the EU to take forward projects with a range of themes, including maths, the environment, language and literacy, arts and business,” said Mr O’Dowd.

“This experience can only serve to expand their horizons and will deliver side benefits such as the opportunity to learn and practise foreign language skills.

“I am pleased to see the range of local institutions that have been successful in applying for funding under the Erasmus+ programme. Almost every sector of the local education system is represented. I congratulate them all and wish all those participating well as they embrace their projects.”

St Michael’s is set to merge with St Paul’s and St Mary’s in September uniting to become St Ronan’s Grammar School.
