Success at Harper Adams for two locals

Two local students are celebrating academic success at Harper Adams University in Shropshire.

Timmy Davidson from Kilrea has become the first winner of the newly introduced Cogent Breeding Company‘s Award for the Top Placement Student at Harper Adams.

A former pupil of Rainey Endowed School in Magherafelt, Tim is a student on the BSc (Hons) Agriculture degree course at Harper. He undertook his placement year with broiler breeder Aviagen based in Scotland.

During the year he gained a working insight into hatchery operations and several other production aspects of the business.

Meanwhile Andrew Torrens from Garvagh, graduated MSc Ruminant Nutrition at the graduation ceremony at Harper Adams University last week.

Andrew, a past pupil of Coleraine Grammar School, completed his undergraduate degree in agriculture at Harper Adams in 2012. He is Ruminant Nutritionist with ForFarmers, an animal feed company in Suffolk.

Established in 1901, Harper Adams University is a specialist provider of higher education for the agricultural and rural sector. The story of the university began with Thomas Harper Adams who was a wealthy Shropshire gentleman farmer. On his death in 1892 he bequeathed his considerable estate 'for the purpose of teaching practical and theoretical agriculture'.

The College opened to just six students in April 1901. In the early years, it offered certificate courses very much of a practical nature.

In December 2012, Harper Adams was award full university title. It was named Modern University of the Year 2017 in the Times Good University Guide 2016, and Whatuni Awards 2016 University of the Year.
