Waringstown walks to victory with schools initiative

Waringstown Primary School Transport Minister Danny Kennedy announced the winners of the recent Travelwise NI My Walk to School competition. Fifteen schools from across Northern Ireland were named as the winners in the sustainable transport initiative which took place during Walk to School Week 2015. Schools in Northern Ireland registered to take part in Walk to School Week and all primary schools were asked to encourage pupils, parents and teachers to get active and to take part in a competition to be in with the chance of winning high Viz vests for all pupils in the school.

The competition, which was run by Travelwise NI, asked pupils across Northern Ireland to use words and images to describe their walk to school.

A record number of schools registered to take part in Walk to School Week 2015 and all primary schools were asked to encourage pupils, parents and teachers to get active. By entering the competition, schools had the opportunity to win high viz vests for each of their pupils.

Fifteen schools from across the country were named as winners in the sustainable transport initiative, one of which was Waringstown Primary School.

Transport Minister Danny Kennedy said: “Walk to School Week offers a positive platform to improve the travel habits and health of our young people and it is fantastic to see so many schools from across Northern Ireland getting involved. I would like to congratulate all fifteen schools on winning the competition and also thank all the pupils, parents and teachers that walked to and from school and took the time to enter the competition. Encouraging children to walk to school has major benefits for the whole community. It reduces vehicle pollution, decreases traffic congestion and helps to keep children fit and healthy. This year’s prize of high vis vests also helps to highlight the importance of safety.”
