Wheels in motion at St Ronan’s

The principals of St Michael’s, St Paul’s and St Mary’s did not put in for the role of principal at the new school formed by their amalgamation, the ‘MAIL’ has learned.

It was confirmed by the CCMS as they announced the first principal of St Ronan’s as Michele Corkey, current principal of St Mark’s High School in Warrenpoint.

The new school will open in September next year, operating initially on a split site basis.

New principal Michele Corkey said: “It is a great honour to be appointed Principal Designate of St Ronan’s College. I have dedicated my career to the development of Catholic, non-selective education and feel that the establishment of St Ronan’s College creates a blueprint for the future of education in Northern Ireland.

“My vision for St Ronan’s is to develop an all ability centre of excellence, rooted in the core values of service, equality and social justice which, in partnership with students, parents, staff, governors, external agencies and the local community promotes and develops the values of Catholic education.

Speaking on behalf of the Interim Board of Governors, Chair Pat Carville said: “Michele has an excellent track record as Vice Principal in St Louise’s College Belfast, and currently Principal of St Mark’s in Warrenpoint. She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to St Ronan’s College, she is very pupil focussed, a strong people’s person, fully committed to the Catholic ethos, has a strong vision and boundless energy.”

An interim board of Governors for the new school have been appointed. It includes representatives from each of the existing three schools.

The interim board will be responsible for setting up a scheme of management for St Ronan’s, appointing the principal designate and assisting the appointed principal with other functions such as setting the admissions criteria, specifying the uniform, agreeing the curriculum and ironing out the logistics of how the split site school will operate. It is anticipated that the new principal will be appointed by the end of October 2014.
