Yet another outstanding year for College pupils

THE GCSE results capped another outstanding year for Lurgan College.

Headmaster, Mr Trevor Robinson, was delighted with the performances of his pupils in the examinations with over 98% of the year group achieving the top grades of A*-C in at least eight subjects.

He said: “Every year the pupils of Lurgan College consistently rise to the challenge of fulfilling their true academic potential and the Year 12 class of 2012 has certainly carried on the school’s very proud tradition of academic excellence.

“I congratulate the hardworking pupils, their highly committed teachers and their supportive and, at times, long suffering parents on these excellent examination performances. Once again I acknowledge the key role played by our dedicated colleagues in Lurgan Junior High School and, of course, our excellent feeder primary schools who provided them a solid grounding in the early part of their education and who, year on year, furnish our 14-19 Grammar School with well motivated pupils of the highest academic calibre.

“An analysis of the grades achieved by the highest ever number of Year 12 pupils to sit GCSE examinations at Lurgan College reveals an extremely impressive set of GCSE results by any standards. Grades A* and A accounted for almost 40% of the total grades achieved (compared to the national average of just 23%) while the overall pass rate of over 95% was significantly higher than the national average of 69%. Another outstanding statistic is the 99% of pupils who obtained 7+ GCSEs at grades A*-C, which, again, is much higher that the NI grammar school average which has sat at 90% over the past few years.

“Top grades were recorded in all of the different subject areas but the results in Art and Design (where all the pupils achieved A*/A grades for an 11th successive year!), in Music (where almost 90% of the class obtained A*/A grades) and in ICT (where over 80% of the pupils secured A*/A grades) are surely worthy of special mention. The following subjects scored an over 95% pass rate at grades A*-C: Additional Mathematics, Art & Design, Biology, Business Studies, Design & Technology, English Literature, History, ICT, Journalism, Music and Physics.

“Carrying on the College’s proud tradition of outstanding academic excellence, two former King’s Park Primary School pupils, Julie Morrow and Jack Harrison, were awarded an amazing 11 straight A*/A grades: an utterly remarkable feat by any standards!”

The College’s Senior Leadership Team and Careers staff have been extremely busy advising pupils regarding their all important choices for next year with the vast majority returning to study four AS Levels in the biggest ever Sixth Form of Lurgan College. The heavily oversubscribed school continues to enjoy significant growth in its pupil population with the highest ever enrolment figure in the 14-19 school’s long and illustrious history.

“These results, coupled with the commendable A Level and AS Level performances last week, highlight, once again, the outstanding success of our Dickson Plan with its unique system of delayed academic transfer at age 14. Our pupils’ remarkable achievements should fill our whole community with pride and galvanise all of the partners to work closely together in order to build upon the success of the well tried and tested Craigavon Two Tier System in the coming years.”
