Youth and community facility for Derriaghy officially opened

A NEWLY refurbished youth and community facility at Derriaghy has been officially opened by the Chief Executive of the SEELB, Stanton Sloan.

The centre, which was formerly the Primary School in Derriaghy, has been refurbished to facilitate youth and community provision in the area.

Derriaghy Primary School closed its doors in June last year. Prior to the school closure, SEELB senior officers met with community representatives and local politicians regarding the possibility of subsequent youth/community use of the building.

An ad-hoc group made up of representatives of the local Derriaghy Community Association, Lisburn City Council and SEELB Youth Services met on a frequent basis to test the feasibility of the project, complete a needs analysis of the area and to bid for funding for refurbishment of the school building.

The initiative is the result of positive partnership working between the three partner groups and will provide a much needed space and focus for local community activities.

Mr Sloan welcomed the development of the new facility and thanked all those ‘who played a part in making it possible’.

In particular he thanked Jeffrey Donaldson for the significant support he provided to the initiative.

The launch was attended by the Mayor Brian Heading who commended the SEELB for providing this new facility for the area.

“The provision of a youth and community facility and the activities which it offers are anticipated to reduce anti-social behaviour in the area as the young people will have plenty to occupy their spare time.

“I hope that the youth of the area avail of the new facility and enjoy it in the months and years ahead,” he said.

Monica Meehan, Youth Officer for the area added: “The centre offers excellent opportunities for the Derriaghy Community to move forward.

“Until now young people in the area have not had access to youth services and this initiative will ensure that the voice of young people can be heard and they can make a positive contribution to the development of their community.”

Jim McLaughlin, chairperson of the Derriaghy Community Association commented: “The development of this centre has given the Derriaghy Community back its heart.

“When the primary school closed we thought it was the end for our community but looking at what we have now gives us great hope for the future.”
