The DUP MLA believes it can be done by the council in a managed manner and that it should be done to help people who are in intense grief.

Cemeteries have been closed while the country is in lockdown during thee COVID-19 pandemic.

The Upper Bann MLA said: “Whilst I recognise the necessity of lockdown guidelines and observing social distancing across the country, I believe we should seriously consider revising the guidance to allow cemeteries to reopen.

“I have been engaging with distressed constituents who have raised the issue of not being able to maintain gravesites or lay flowers on the anniversary of a loved one’s passing.

“Much has been said regarding the negative effect of lockdown regulations on mental well-being, and for many, visiting a graveside is important for solace and reflection throughout this difficult period.

“We should be actively exploring a solution that will allow graveyards to reopen in a controlled and safe manner, strictly observing social distancing and reduced opening hours.”

A spokesperson for ABC Council said: “The decision to temporally close Council-owned cemeteries was made in the interest of public safety. It’s our aim to re-open these facilities as soon as we are confident that it is safe to do so. We will continue to monitor the situation as it evolves and will promptly notify the public of any change to the current closure arrangements.”
