Usually, Mid Ulster District Council holds civic awards ceremonies to honour successes across the district in a wide range of disciplines including dance, music, community spirit, sport, business and education.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Council has been unable to hold these events.

Speaking about the issue at the Council’s monthly meeting, Torrent councillor Niamh Doris, suggested Council find a way to ensure those who were to be honoured receive their recognition.

“I think we should deliver their awards to them,” said the Sinn Fein representative.

“We should send them, along with a letter explaining that we have not been able to hold an event but that we still recognise their achievements.”

This proposal was welcomed by independent councillor Barry Monteith.

“I think it is a good idea,” said Cllr Monteith. “I think, Chair, the letter should come from yourself and also acknowledge the nominating councillor.

“This is a situation forced upon us, and we know that there are a lot of things you would have liked to do, to end your year as Chair, that you won’t get to do.

“So I think a letter from yourself, also recognising the nominating councillor, is a good way to handle this situation.”

The idea was proposed by Councillor Doris and seconded by Councillor Monteith.
