Mid Ulster initiative sees cooked meals delivered to those in need

Chairman of Mid Ulster Volunteer Centre George Shiels said: “I have been associated with these two groups for 20 years and felt that if we used our combined capabilities, we could provide cooked meals delivered to the door for those disadvantaged within the community, many of whom are terrified at the idea of entering a shop at this time.

“I spoke to Michele of the volunteer centre and Ashley of Out and About and together we made the decision to deliver meals on Wednesdays and Saturdays dropping off two meals on each occasion thereby covering four days each week.

“Both organisations have large databases of users living with disadvantage and of course the volunteer centre has large numbers of volunteers willing to volunteer whilst the community transport has a fleet of buses and drivers to handle the deliveries.

“The more we thought about the project the more it seemed a no-brainer.”

Thanking everyone involved in the work, Mr Shiels stressed that many people have worked together in recent days to get the project off the ground.

He paid tribute in particular to the staff of Mid Ulster Volunteer Centre and Out and About Community Transport and Henry McGlone for actual support and advice.
