Temporary reprieve for nursing home

A local nursing home originally earmarked for closure has been given a temporary reprieve as part of efforts to deal with the coronavirus crisis.

A number of residents have already moved from Ravenhill Private Nursing Home in Greenisland to alternative accommodation following last month’s shock news that the home would shut.

However, the Northern Health and Social Care Trust confirmed this week that it is working with the home to secure the availability of beds in light of the ongoing outbreak.

A spokesperson said: “The Trust is working closely with Ravenhill Nursing Home, and other independent providers, to secure the availability of beds to support the Trust in our contingency plans as we deal with coronavirus.

“We would place on record our thanks to all providers for working with us as we deal with this unprecedented challenge.”

Owners of the Shore Road home declined to comment on the news; however, it has been broadly welcomed in the local community.

Commenting on the development, Knockagh area DUP Councillor Peter Johnston said: “This home had huge amounts of support from the staff, residents and community. I am so pleased that in the midst of so much concern and anxiety about Covid-19 that a good news story has come about.”
