The Ulster Unionist representative issued the plea after being contacted by the Castle Practice at Carrickfergus Health Centre.

In a Facebook post, Mr Stewart said: “Just received the following message and information update from Castle Practice. ‘Our staff are under intense pressure at the moment, but are working their absolute hardest at the moment.’

“These are very difficult times folks and I know many people are concerned and seeking advice but please be kind and respectful to everyone especially those on the frontline.”

Meanwhile, in a letter to this newspaper, Dr Alan Stout, chair, BMA’s Northern Ireland general practitioners committee and Dr Barney McCoy, Chair, Northern Local Medical Committee, addressed the issue too.

They wrote: “We are also hearing distressing reports of frontline staff working in GP practices, hospitals and pharmacies being abused by members of the public. This must stop. We understand that this is frightening time for everyone, but we are all in this together.

“Please be patient with everyone who works in frontline health services as they are doing their best to help and support you in stressful conditions.”
