Fighting for Causeway

A Causeway Trade Union Council (CTUC) has been set up to lead the local community in resisting what it describes as the “savage cuts the Government is making to our public services.”

The CTUC was established at a meeting in the Lodge Hotel, Coleraine on February 2 attended by representatives from NIPSA, UNISON, CWU, NASUWT and Connect trades unions.

It covers the Coleraine, Ballymoney and Moyle Council areas.

The recent Compton Report into the provision of acute health services across Northern Ireland leaves Causeway Hospital particularly vulnerable.

The Accident and Emergency Department at the hospital is under threat as are a large number of local jobs if the proposal to centralise administration is implemented.

This area needs emergency services and needs those jobs, according to the CTUC.

Causeway Trades Council Secretary, Rodger Doherty, said: “The Government would have us believe that we are all in this together and that these cuts are necessary.

“Yet billions of pounds of taxes - owed by large companies and wealthy individuals - which could be spent on public services go uncollected every year”.

“All trade union members who live in this area are invited to attend the next meeting on Wednesday, March 7 at the Causeway Hospital to plan a robust campaign to protect our health services.
