Hundreds expected at this year's Walk of Hope in Cookstown

Hundreds of people are expected to take part in this year's Walk of Hope, as year-on-year the event gathers more supporters in the local area.

Organised by Mid Ulster Clergy Forum, the Beacon Centre and local mental health groups, the event - now in its third year - aims to raise awareness of suicide.

This year, the annual Walk of Hope in Cookstown will take place on Sunday, November 27.

Supported through Mid Ulster District Council’s Good Relations programme, the deputy chair, Councillor Sharon McAleer, said: “Too many people in our community have personally experienced the excruciating impact of suicide. The affect it has on those left behind is devastating.

“Events like the Walk of Hope allow the whole community to unite to raise awareness of the help and support that exists for those who feel their situation and their lives are utterly hopeless.”

The walk will conclude with a Service of Hope in Cookstown centre at 5pm.

This will include a personal story by Dr Leonard McCammon and music by Cookstown Folk Club and The Bridge Singers.

The Mid Ulster ‘Walk of Hope’ begins at 4.15pm at the car park of Holy Trinity College, Chapel Street, Cookstown and ends at the Christmas tree in James Street.

Just bring along your own candle or symbol of hope and join in the walk.
