Magherafelt man to launch charity to raise awareness of rare brain condition

Called BRAINNS (Building Research and Awareness for Isolated Neuro and Neuro Sarcoidosis), the charity will be officially launched at an event next month in Moyola Golf Club, Castledawson.

Dougie Wylie, a research scientist, was left severely disabled after developing the rare condition - neuro sarcoidosis - just over a year ago.

His cousin Sarah Wylie told the Mail today that a fundraising table quiz will be held on the evening of the launch - Saturday November 19 at 7.30pm - to help raise funds.

The Mail has published a few stories highlighting Dougie's battle with the condition.

"Unfortunately, Dougie's condition has worsened since the last article so time is of the essence to get the funds raised," she said.

"The support we, his family, have received to help me host the quiz has been overwhelming, I do not think I have ever been to a table quiz with so many raffle prizes available, thanks to the generosity of local people and business mainly.

"The response we have had from those who wish to attend has left me emotional. Thankfully it seems that it will be a great success."

Although he is confined to a wheelchair, Dougie is mentally very alert and is hoping to carry on helping with research to find treatments and ultimately a cure.

“I have a lot of hope for the future,” he said in a recent interview and believes brain cell technology will improve with time.

Dougie who is married to Gail, lives in London, but travels regularly home to Magherafelt when health permits.
