Portrush doctor is GP of the Year award

A Portrush doctor, who has been named GP of the Year, has vowed to continue to make patient care her number one priority.

Dr Julie Anne McKergan (34) was presented with the top award at the Royal College of GPs Northern Ireland Gala Awards held at the Dunadry Hotel, Antrim.

Dr McKergan said: “I was very shocked and overjoyed to win the award.

“Since winning, the reaction of patients, friends and family has been overwhelming.

“It means so much to me to see how pleased patients are that I won. I greatly appreciate all the lovely comments I have received and endeavour to continue to try and provide the best care for patients that I possibly can.”

Dr McKergan has worked as a locum GP in Portrush for five years.

She also does locum work in Portstewart Family Practice and, occasionally, in other practices in the area.

Ms Claire Gibson, who nominated Dr McKergan, told the gathered audience: “I will never be able to thank her enough and I will forever be grateful to her.

“The care and support shown by Dr McKergan has far exceeded my expectations. To have suffered two major life changing experiences in only a matter of weeks came as such a shock but one which has been helped overcome by the support of my GP.”

The evening which was supported by GlaxoSmithKline, Bridge Accountancy and INPS Vision attracted special guests, GPs and practice staff from all parts of Northern Ireland to share the successes and achievements within general practice. The awards are designed to recognise both GPs and practice staff who go that ‘extra mile’ to ensure that their patients receive the highest standards of care possible, and as in previous years the awards were highly competitive, with numerous nominations being received from around Northern Ireland.
