For weeks Sinn Fein Cllr Paul Duffy has been bombarded with residents asking for help in dealing with rodents.

Cllr Duffy says those affected live close to the Peace Wall at the former Denny’s factory and along the Corcrain River.

He believes the rats are coming from the river.

“There has been an increase in sightings of rodents in and around homes which is likely due to the recent bad weather and looking food/water amongst other reasons.

“Rodents can carry diseases and their spread must be kept under control so I advise residents to keep all rubbish in bins, don’t have a build up of unwanted items outside and utilise the council’s free collection service for most unwanted items by telephoning 02838339031.”

A spokesperson for ABC council said: “Council is not responsible for pest control services. However, we do provide advice and information leaflets to residents on the best action to take should a pest problem arise. Any occupier sighting rodents on their land should contact a competent pest control company to carry out safe pest control treatment. For further advice contact Environmental Health on 0300 0300 900.”
