The SDLP deputy leader said that it was the second time in three weeks that a sewage pipe had ruptured at the hospital.

“We have again been told that this was caused by the misuse of toilet facilities but it seems increasingly likely that the true cause lies in the sewage system which is not adequate to deal with the capacity of the Hospital,” said the MLA.

“This is a very serious issue affecting both patient safety and confidence and I am glad to hear that specialist plumbers and cleaning staff were contacted immediately to bring the blockages under control and that infection control protocols have been put in place,” she told the ‘MAIL’.

“While I welcome that the trust have introduced section control measures they must confront the real cause of the fault.

“I have in the past raised the issue with the Health Minister and will continue to press the matter until the situation is effectively resolved.”
