Successful year for BreatheEasy Causeway lung group

It was another successful year for Breathe Easy Causeway as they pursued their twin main objectives – promoting public awareness of the important need to encourage more to be done to improve respiratory health and fund-raising.

This was the message delivered by Chairman, Bill Blair, at the Group’s May annual general meeting.

Putting their words into action, Breathe Easy Causeway announced that they were donating £10,000 to the British Lung Foundation to be divided evenly among the research projects for two of the main breathing disorders – IPF (idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis) and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

Not content to rest on their laurels, the Group also appealed for public support for two forthcoming fund-raising events.

Firstly a bike ride to the Downings which will take place on Saturday, June 13. Funds raised will be shared evenly between Breathe Easy Causeway and Meningitis Research.

The bike ride leaves Portrush at approximately 8.30am travelling through Coleraine, on to Castlerock, Limavady then Londonderry where there is a food stop courtesy of Kieran Dunne of KD Catering.

Leaving Londonderry it’s onto Letterkenny where there is a coffee stop at the Clanree Hotel. From Letterkenny it’s up the mountain to Ramelton, then Milford, Carrigart and on to the Downings - approximately 94 miles.

Riders taking part are Charles Dickson, Liam McAfee and Mervyn Caskey. Breathe Easy Causeway is indebted to these three gentlemen’s commitment to this challenging fundraising event .

Secondly, the Coleraine-based BLF subsidiary Group announced that its members would be taking part in a sponsored walk along the Portrush West Strand promenade on a date to be arranged for late June.

Mr Blair said: “It may not be a long marathon walk. But it must be appreciated that many of our members are themselves battling severe breathing disorders and they are to be praised for their determination and initiative to play their part in the continuing struggle to improve the lifestyle of the many thousands of respiratory patients.”

IPF is a progressive condition where inflammation or scar tissue builds up in the lungs, making them thick and hard.
