Town taxi firm wins health challenge award

The initiative, ‘Drive 4 Health’ was funded by the Public Health Agency and organised by Closing the Gap. Other partners included Craigavon Leisure Centre and ManAlive, a Cancer Focus NI Project covering the Southern area.

The programme ran over a period of 12 weeks and focussed on lifestyle changes and physical activity to increase fitness and wellbeing and prevent illness and disease.

Over 50 participants took part with significant individual results such as weight loss, decreased blood pressure, improved body composition, increased awareness of the benefits of a healthy diet, prevention of heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes etc.

The winning company also received three months free drinking water supply and water bottles from ManAlive.

Closing the Gap Health Inequalities Worker, Alex McMeekin said: “It is very commendable that Mini Cabs have participated so fully in the ‘Drive 4 Health’ project, and they clearly are a company who feel a duty of care towards their workforce, we congratulate them on doing so well.”

In partnership with local councils, funded by the Public Health Agency and delivered by Southern Group Environmental Health Committee, Closing the Gap provides information and signposting to a wide range of health and well being services such as smoking cessation, drugs and alcohol, sexual health, teenage pregnancy, nutrition and promotion of healthy eating and matters relating to men’s health.
