Carrickfergus Castle shut until mid-November

Carrickfergus Castle will remain shut until the middle of next month following the tightening of pandemic response restrictions.

The medieval attraction, which is managed by Historic Environment Division within the Department for Communities (DfC), only reopened at the beginning of October after the health emergency lockdown.

A DfC spokesperson said: “In line with public health regulations to prevent the spread of Covid-19 which came into effect on Friday, October 16, Carrickfergus Castle will remain closed to the public until Saturday 14 November. Further information is available at Discover NI.”

The castle, which attracted approximately 49,000 visitors last year, is regarded as key to the development of Carrickfergus as a heritage-led tourism hub.

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council this week reported that plans to invest almost £40m to regenerate, reposition and rebrand the town are “continuing apace”. Read here
