Flood-hit Carrickfergus Museum closed for ‘essential maintenance’

Council announced yesterday (Tuesday) the Antrim Street premises are currently closed for “essential maintenance due to flooding”.

The local authority went on to apologise for any inconvenience, adding it was working to have the building opened again as soon as possible.

In an update today, a spokesperson for Mid and East Antrim Council said: “Council officers are working closely to establish the cause of the flooding and to assess the level of damage caused.”

The spokesperson confirmed that a special event planned for tomorrow (Thursday) night as part of the Northern Ireland Science Festival will go ahead as scheduled.

Carrickfergus Museum will host a team from Armagh Planetarium and Observatory to run ‘Navigation by the Stars’.

Exploring how sailors found their way across the high seas before modern technology, it starts at 7pm.

Members of the public are invited to join the scientists who will be bringing a number of telescopes for handling.

The talk is designed to complement the museum’s exhibition, ‘Landings: Conquest and Commerce’, which features models of the HMY Mary and HMY Henrietta, the ships that brought King William III to Carrickfergus in 1690.
