And so the wheels were put in motion for a birthday surprise on Saturday for the Macfin woman who has given the Orange Institution almost 73 years service.

Mary had joined Drumaheagles WLOL 68 in 1948 when the Worshipful Mistress was Lady Mary McCleery – wife of Sir William Victor McCleery MP, who would later become grand master of Ireland and the world.

After the death of Lady McCleery WLOL 68 went dormant, however in September 1970 it was reinstalled as Ballymoney and District Daughters of Ulster WLOL 68.

A number of the remaining Drumaheagles sisters transferred to Ballymoney including Mary who has received her 50 years of service badge, and also 70 years of service badge.

On Saturday, ahead of her birthday which takes place today, Mary, who lives with her daughter and son-in-law, opened her door to representatives from Ballymoney and District Daughters of Ulster WLOL 68, Drumaheagles Young Defenders Flute Band, Drumaheagles Junior LOL 99 and Drumaheagles LOL 1099.

Secretary of Drumaheagles LOL 1099 Malcolm Steele, whose wife is one of Mary’s carers, said: “Mary had told her carers that all she wanted for her birthday was a bag of crisps, the band to play for her, and a fish supper for her tea.

“Given the restrictions it wasn’t as straightforward to pull together, but we managed it in a safe way.

“We were glad to be able to sort it out for her. She seemed to enjoy it, especially the band playing in her front garden, and I think for the family it lifted everyone’s spirits.”
