Gas attacks were considered a very real threat in 1939, and the Government decided that gas masks should be issued to every man, woman and child. ‘Littlewoods’ Barn Mills, Carrickfergus 1946. Barn Mills taken over by Littlewoods factory and tasked with turning production towards the manufacture of parachutes and, by late 1942, also para-dummies. The mill became the world’s largest parachute factory employing approximately 1,200 workers. In 1945, the workforce stood at 112 males and 1,032 females. Photo: Carrickfergus Museum
