A Twitch in time – Gail Mahon’s new works go on show at Flowerfield

FLOWERFIELD welcomes an exciting and unusual exhibition of ceramic art from Saturday October 6 onwards, when artist Gail Mahon unveils a new collection of work under the title ‘Elemental Twitch: The Midd Mass Findings’.

The exhibition represents a conceptual alchemy of constructed forms, and is a show in which Mahon transforms the ceramicist’s craft into a conceptual art form.

“The title, ‘Elemental Twitch: The Middle Mass Findings’, refers to the results of experimentation and enquiry in the original sense being,” says Gail, “pared down to points of alignment, movement, axis and balance.”

Mahon’s ceramic installations and sculptures manipulate the qualities of both hard and soft materials to create a visual language that is instinctually readable through layers, engaging the senses and physical space of the gallery.

Gail describes her practice as “hybrid… and happily sits in the shifting boundaries of craft and sculpture, at the intersection of an interdisciplinary art form”. Her background in contemporary crafts is the basis of her work ethos, showing intrigue by the monogamist relationship to materials followed by traditional craftsmanship.

Yet Mahon finds she is seduced by the mixing, her largely ceramic practice, with sculptural materials, such textile, latex, wood, metal and found objects, to draw out stories and heighten the experience of these gallery based works.

Underlying themes that emerge from the exhibition, which has been supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s Individual Artist Award, shift between personal and universal notions of uncertainty, restlessness and transition.
