Abbeyfield residents prove they’re good sports

RESIDENTS and staff of Abbeyfield House in Merville Garden Village recently joined forces with pupils from Model Primary School, Carrickfergus for an inter-generational sports morning.

The event, which took place on June 15 at Carrickfergus Amphitheatre Wellness Centre, was organised to celebrate Abbeyfield Week (June 9 - 16), which is an annual opportunity for residents and staff in Abbeyfield Houses across Northern Ireland to strengthen their links with the local community.

The Merville residents, including 101-year-old Mabel Williams, joined those from Abbeyfield House in Greenisland and the school pupils in a series of activities, including boccia, indoor kurls, and armchair aerobics.

Aislinn Morgan, Manager of Abbeyfield House in Merville, described the event as a wonderful opportunity for the Abbeyfield residents to interact with local young people.

“This year we’ve focussed on sports and exercise, as we believe that it is really important for our residents to keep active, to keep their minds active and to try and learn something new every day,” she explained.
