All Killers, no fillers on day one of Tennent’s Vital

US rockers The Killers kicked off this year’s Tennent’s Vital in style, thrilling fans with a stunning set featuring some of their biggest hits.

Tens of thousands of music fans descended on Belfast’s Boucher Road Playing Fields on Thursday (August 21) for the opening day of Vital 2014, which also featured incredible live performances from Bastille and Belfast’s very own Go Wolf.

The Killers, rounding off their world tour, put on a fantastic show packed with fan favourites like Somebody Told Me, All These Things That I’ve Done and Runaways before finishing with an encore of two of their biggest hits, When You Were Young and Mr Brightside.

The Las Vegas four-piece are spoilt for choice when it comes to drawing up a set list, having recorded dozens of hits since their debut album Hot Fuss exploded onto the scene in 2004. And notable exclusions from Thursday night’s set included some of their biggest anthems such as Read My Mind and Jenny Was a Friend of Mine.

The unseasonably chilly weather didn’t put off frontman Brandon Flowers, who paid tribute to Belfast and Northern Ireland, recalling visits to the Giant’s Causeway, Bushmills Distillery and The Crown Bar.

The band then paid homage to local music legends The Undertones and Van Morrison by launching into cover versions of Teenage Kicks and Brown Eyed Girl - both tracks a big hit with the crowd, who were only too keen to sing along.

Reflecting on day one of this year’s event, Sarah Shimmons, Beer Marketing Manager for Tennent’s NI, said: “Tennent’s Vital got off to an incredible start today and we were thrilled to welcome tens of thousands of fans to a gloriously sunny Boucher Road Playing Fields for what was a fantastic first day of this year’s festival. The crowd were brilliant and there was an amazing atmosphere here tonight, as we saw absolutely phenomenal sets from The Killers, Bastille and Go Wolf. We’ll be returning on Sunday with a top bill of some of the biggest DJs in the world, and can’t wait to see you all there!”

Tennent’s Vital continues this bank holiday weekend when dance legend David Guetta, Steve Angello, Klangkarussell, Robin Schulz and Al Gibbs will take to the stage for an unmissable night of EDM on Sunday, August 24.
