Annual walk for Zomba a big success

Surpassing last year’s total, an incredible sum of £2,900 was raised. The event, now in its eleventh year, was jointly organised by Coleraine Borough Council and the ‘Get Up & Go’ Walking Club in Kilrea, with the barbecue kindly hosted by Jon Mitchel’s Gaelic Athletic Club in Glenullin.

In stark contrast to last year’s event, walkers experienced a beautiful evening to enjoy the panoramic views afforded by the Drumbane Trail around Mullan’s hill farm at Drumbane, Glenullin. Afterwards, participants and others were treated to a fabulous barbecue kindly organised and provided by the ladies from the “Get Up & Go” Walking Club under the guidance of Monica McGuigan and Margaret Mullan, with cooking assistance from Barry Dallat, Arbutus, Kilrea. Approximately 300 people attended the barbecue against a backdrop of traditional music freely provided by local and visiting musicians. The event, as usual, was FREE of charge, with donations accepted for the Zomba Action Project.

One of the organisers, Mark Strong, Coleraine Borough Council’s Countryside & Marine Manager, said: “Again the generosity of local people has been amazing. Even during difficult economic times, people continue to ‘dig deep’ and give generously to help those worse off than themselves. Special thanks must go to Margaret and Charlie Mullan, for their continued support and also to Monica McGuigan, Margaret Mullan and their team of helpers and Jon Mitchel’s GAC for the use of their fabulous facilities.”
