Burnavon Writers attend cross border event

Ten members of Burnavon Writers have just been hosted to attend a two day residential event as part of a cross border project which has linked them with groups from Monaghan and Craigavon.

Earlier this year the Cookstown based creative writing group became involved with Monaghan Song and Poetry Writer’s Group which was set up under Monaghan Community Forum’s ‘Hands Together’ project. This initiative is financed by the European Union’s European Regional Development fund through the Peace III Programme and funded through Monaghan Peace III Partnership. During a visit to Monaghan for a collaborative performance event before the summer Burnavon Writers also met up with members of Lough Neagh Writers group and a three way partnership was formed.

The residential programme, which was drawn up by Monaghan County Council Project Officer Dara Mac Gabhann ,included a range of workshops. Among these was one delivered by acclaimed poet Noel Monahan, who shared his tips and techniques for successful writing and publishing. There was also a session on voice projection, led by founder-director of Monaghan Gospel Choir, Davis Drum.

A highlight of the residential was an open mic event, when every participant was invited to share a song, recital or reading which they had written or composed. The quality and diversity of the presentations was an inspiration in itself. An enjoyable and productive time was had by all who attended.
