Busy period at McAfee Auctions draws to close

MCAFEE Auctions’ year has just concluded with their annual Christmas art sale, and what a busy six weeks it has been - five sales, 2750 lots later, and over 1000 viewers.

First of the sales was an estate clearance at a property in Semicock Road, Ballymoney, when the contents were viewed on the property, and sold by catalogue and screen at McAfee Auctions premises.  The sale to a packed house that evening was electrifying and over 500 lots of fine furnishings, collectibles and even pony traps came under the hammer.

Top price of the night was £1,000 for a very nice ruby oil lamp, which ended up going to an English buyer who had viewed via the internet.  Other prices include £950 for a jaunting car and £900 for a pony trap.

The second sale was a 800 lot sale of antique and general furnishings in the Ballycastle auction rooms, when a large crowd bid it out for a large variety of items, varying from a pair of silver plated table lamp bases at £580 to a two bottle tantalus at £160.

Demand was also exceptionally good for collectibles and crystal, particularly Waterford crystal, again via the internet a good proportion of the larger lots of Waterford made there way to the USA.

A fine furnishings sale, which included the ‘McKee Collection of Staffordshire’, was next in the Ballymoney sale rooms. and again a large attendance battled it out on the evening, not only in the room, but by telephone where up to five lines at times had been booked for some of the more popular lots.

Top price of the evening was £1,200 for an oak wake or hunting table, and the more unusual and rarer pieces of Staffordshire included £160 for ‘The Tithe Pig’, a 2006 Mercedes CDI Coupe Car, soared off at £8,000.

The 4th quarterly sale of fine furnishings took place in the Loughgall sale rooms, and despite really cold, foggy and wet weather, a good crowd turned out for the 550 lot sale.

 Demand was particularly good for a nice collection of silver and gold, which have been performing really well, as was demand for the smaller pieces of furniture, and the many collectibles which were on offer.  Two old ruby oil lamp shades did particularly well on the evening selling at £520 and £440.  A small silver tea caddy realised £250, and a pair of serves plaques realised £320, a double weight Vienna £700, and three long cased clocks £700, £570 and £400.
