He said: “As drivers from Portglenone pass the Tamlaght/Townhill Road crossroads the road becomes more narrow and pedestrians are effectively boxed onto the road before the brow of the hill because the adjoining fields are well above road level. This makes this particularly dangerous for local people who I have met here.

There are a significant number of houses in this area and coupled with the fact that vehicles are passing at high speeds this makes this stretch especially dangerous.

“We have contacted Roads Service to highlight these concerns and have outlined the need for this work to be carried out.”

Local Rasharkin Sinn Féin representative Leanne Peacock added: “Roads Service has agreed to our request for slow signage and warning bend signage as well as putting ‘Slow’ markings on the road.

“This is not a very safe place for people to walk and unfortunately too many vehicles speed coming over this hill on a regular basis.

“Daithí secured significant works to the Tamlaght/Townhill crossroads some years ago for drivers on Tamlaght coming onto the Townhill Road.

“What we need to see now is another significant piece of work to protect pedestrians including schoolchildren that live in this area.”
