The common grown Calla Lily normally flowers late spring to early summer, and grows 100cm–120cm high. Large white flowers die back in winter and return early spring.

This variety tends to withstand our climate better than the more modern varieties.

In the garden centre we have this beautiful plant in a deep red, white, yellow, purple, pink and a very deep purple (almost black). Planting can take place

now using a good planting compost such as Westland Rose Tree & Shrub with a four-month feed. If planting in the border, mix in some grit or small stones

to improve drainage. The same applies to planting in a container.

Arum lillies will flower into the autumn.

Always keep your plants moist, but not waterlogged, feed every 10 days with a high potash feed such as Phostrogen or Tomato Food. Remove any dead flowers to keep the plant looking at its best and to stimulate the development of more flowers.

As Arum lillies are not the hardiest of plants, bring them into the glasshouse during the winter to protect from frost. If planted outside in the garden, use a thick mulch of bark or compost to protect them.
