Councilto host‘denial’ play

LISBURN City Council is to host a play entitled ‘Denial’ on Thursday January 26 to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2012 as part of its Good Relations Programme.

The play will take place in the Studio Theatre at Lagan Valley Island at 7.30pm. The cost per ticket is £5 and refreshments will be provided. ‘Denial’ is open to local residents aged 15 years and over.

Holocaust Memorial Day is marked annually to commemorate victims and also to raise awareness, inform and educate people about the Holocaust and its contemporary relevance. This year’s theme is ‘Speak Up, Speak Out’.

Councillor Thomas Beckett, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure Services Committee, said: “The Council chose this method of memorial as it is not only a play – it is a commemoration and a warning. It is not to be seen as a history lesson about Auschwitz but as a startling reminder that discrimination is regrettably still present in society today in many forms.

“Denial is designed to be a powerful and thought provoking experience for both the actors and the audience. Following the performance there will be a discussion on the topics covered by the play – the Nazi holocaust and contemporary issues,” he concluded.
