Coup for Airshow

THE Portrush Airshow has pulled off one of its greatest coups in securing the Vulcan bomber for the September spectacular.

The return to the air of the only flying example has become one of the biggest stories in aviation in recent years and along with the return of the Red Arrows marks another bumper crowd pleaser for the seaside air show, now celebrating its tenth year.

Since 2008 when Vulcan XH558 made a triumphant return to air displays around the UK, she has been the star of the show wherever she has appeared, generating such a strong reaction from her two million-plus audience that the media were moved to call it the ‘Vulcan Effect’.

This iconic aircraft will be a very popular visitor to the Airshow on the Sunday afternoon because she has not appeared in Northern Ireland for nearly 30 years and is set to steal the show with the famous howl of her four Olympus jet engines and the sight of her magnificent delta wings climbing almost vertically into the sky.

Dr Robert Pleming, chairman of the Trust responsible for managing the restoration and flying programme said: “We are very pleased indeed to showcase this incredible aircraft to the people of Northern Ireland for the very first time at Portrush and in such a wonderful setting as West Bay. I am sure that the sight of XH558 flying over will stir emotions in many people.”

The Mayor of Coleraine, Alderman Maurice Bradley, said: “It is fantastic news that the Airshow has again been secured through the hard work of our staff and the generosity of the sponsors. It brings so many people to as one of our most important events.”

In addition to two of the world’s greatest air attractions at the free event on 3rd and 4th September, organisers Coleraine Borough Council are promising a packed line-up of classic war birds, modern jets, stunt planes and oddities, as well as a feast of family attractions on the ground. The show has once again been made possible by the contribution of sponsors including NI Tourist Board and some local businesses co-ordinated by Coleraine Borough Chamber of Commerce.
