CRY screening back in borough

Local CRY representative John Lundy said: “We are pleased to be able to offer another screening clinic in Coleraine. The clinic is offered at no charge and is available to anyone aged 14-35.

“Following on from the wonderful images we have seen from the London 2012 Olympics, more and more young people will be inspired to take up sport.”

“There are many young people in this area already involved in sport, many of them have been screened at previous clinics.

“We would encourage local sports clubs to spread the word among their members to come along and get screened. It is important to be healthy in your sport.

“Although sudden cardiac death can affect anyone, it tends to attract the headlines more when sport is involved. We would therefore hope that the local sporting community would continue their support of the clinic.”

John explained: “The current screening programme is offered free of charge at least until the end of 2012. This is possible due to the generosity of local people in raising funds. We are grateful for that and we welcome donations and fundraising support screenings in the future.”

He added that Professor Sanjay Sharma, CRY’s consultant cardiologist was the official cardiologist at the London Games and he was responsible for screening Team GB athletes prior to the Olympics.

“This shows the importance that cardiac health is given at the highest level of sport. Everyone was stunned with what happened Fabrice Muamba earlier this year. The fact is he was one of the lucky ones, he was treated immediately and medical team were on hand straight away.”

“Sadly that is usually not possible. However, we believe that screening can help prevent situations such as these occurring by identifying conditions in advance. We believe it helps save live and we encourage people to come forward and get screened.”
