Curtain rises on The Producers at Theatre at The Mill

MUSICAL fans will have the chance to experience the best of Broadway as the Northern Ireland premiere of the hit show The Producers opens at Theatre at The Mill, Newtownabbey on Friday, August 3.

After three weeks of intense rehearsals, the talented young cast from the Summer Youth Musical Group are straining at the leash to take to the stage in the hilarious, record breaking musical.

The show, which runs from August 3 - 11, follows in the footsteps of the massive summer hits Les Miserables and Oklahoma!

Director Peter Corry says the public will thoroughly enjoy the humour and great tunes of the show, which won a record 12 Tony Awards when it opened on Broadway in 2001.

“We have a cast of more than 40 talented young people from all over Northern Ireland. They have really put everything into making this show a success and I think Northern Ireland theatre goers will be bowled over by the results,” he commented.

Peter has once again teamed up with top musical theatre professionals including musical director Wilson Shields and international choreographer Fleur Mellor.

“It is a huge, over the top show, full of great tunes, laugh-out-loud dialogue and show-stopping dance numbers. I would urge anyone who enjoys live theatre to come along and be thoroughly entertained,” Peter added.

The Producers is based on a Mel Brooks movie which was then developed as a hugely successful Broadway production. Starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, it ran for more than 2,500 performances. It proved equally successful when transferring to London where it ran for three years and spawned a successful 2005 film.

The story tells of Broadway producer Max Bialystock and nerdy accountant Leo Bloom who plan to make millions by producing a sure-fire flop so that they can run off with the money when the show closes after its opening night. Unfortunately their musical ‘Springtime for Hitler’ is so outrageously camp it becomes a massive hit because the audience think it is a satire.

The theatre has produced a short video of the show for anyone wanting more information. It can be viewed at www.theatreatthemill.com.

Tickets priced from £9 are available from the box office on 028 9034 0202 or online at www.theatreatthemill.com
