Diabetes charity walk on White Rocks Beach

DIABETES UK Northern Ireland is urging local people to sign up for its Walk for Diabetes event on White Rocks Beach in Portrush and raise vital funds to support people living with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

The walk will take place on Saturday, June 1 at 11am.

The White Rocks walk is one of 12 taking place throughout May and June, all of which aim to encourage people to be more physically active and to live a healthier lifestyle.

It is two miles long and is a perfect opportunity to get together with the whole family or a group of friends for some exercise in the fresh air while supporting a very worthwhile local cause. The route is suitable for prams and wheelchairs and dogs are allowed on leads. Everyone who completes the route will receive a medal.

The latest figures reveal that more than 2,500 people aged 17 and over in the Coleraine area have been diagnosed with diabetes and it is estimated that an additional 10% have the condition but do not know it.

Naomi Brown, Fundraising Manager at Diabetes UK Northern Ireland commented: “With over 75,000 people in Northern Ireland now living with diabetes and the figure in Coleraine Borough Council having increased by more than 45% in the past five years, we must take steps to curb the rise in this very serious condition.

“By taking part in the Walk for Diabetes event on White Rocks Beach, not only will you be helping to raise money to help us continue our support services and awareness work in Northern Ireland; you’ll also be helping us fund vital research into a cure for Type 1 diabetes.

Diabetes UK is working in partnership with Truvia calorie free sweetener to organise the Walk for Diabetes events and all fundraisers who sign up will receive a free goodie bag.
