Diabetes Group to be formed

BALLYMENA people living with diabetes are being given the opportunity to establish a Voluntary Support Group in the borough by Diabetes UK Northern Ireland.

The charity is holding a discussion and information session on Thursday, February 24, in Tullyglass House Hotel from 7.30-8.30pm to gauge interest.

There is currently no Voluntary Support Group in the Ballymena area and Thursday’s meeting is open to people who may be interested in being part of a group who would meet regularly for talks, activities and social events.

Gill Lunn, Volunteer Development Officer for Diabetes UK Northern Ireland, will be there to meet with people and facilitate the discussion.

Gill says: “This is an opportunity to meet with people in the area and ask for their thoughts as to what they would be interested in.

“Every group is different and it may be that people would like a regular group that fundraises and offers support, or they may prefer to meet a few times a year and hear from healthcare professionals.

“I want to take this time to listen to what people want and ensure if we do establish a Group that it meets the needs of the local people. I would urge as many people as possible to come along – sometimes it’s great just to know that you’re not the only one in the area living with diabetes.”

As well as having a chat about what people want from a Group Gill will also discuss the practicalities of organising a Group locally and how Diabetes UK Northern Ireland can offer support.

The meeting is open to anyone with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes and parents and carers living with someone with diabetes. Refreshments will be served and if anyone is interested in attending the meeting they should contact Gill on 028 9066 6646 or email [email protected]
