Discover the life and works of Irish botanist Augustine Henry

WOULD you like to discover more about Augustine Henry (1857-1930) the Father of Irish Forestry?

If so, mark Tuesday, May 22, in your diary because on that date the Mid-Antrim Museum at The Braid will celebrate his achievements by offering an opportunity to get to know the man whose family hails from Tyanee near Portglenone.

The day begins with a fascinating tour of Portglenone Forest, with Liz O’Connor, a profession guide from the Forestry Service. Upon our return to The Braid, and after lunch, Seamus O’Brien, Curator of the National Botanic Gardens, Kilacurragh, and author of the acclaimed book ‘In the Footsteps of Augustine Henry’ will give an entertaining talk and answer questions on Augustine’s life.

After the talk, participants will have the opportunity to view Mid-Antrim Museum’s current exhibition ‘CHINA: Through the Lens of John Thomson 1868-72’ which includes a small display dedicated to Augustine.

He trained as a doctor and was known to have a love of Chinese flora. In 1881 he visited the country to record the local plant life and collect medical plants.

The tour departs from The Braid, Bridge Street at 11am, returning for lunch at 1pm with the illustrated talk starting at 1.30pm. Prior booking is essential. To book your seat please ring 028 2563 5900. Tickets cost £10 and include lunch. Please bring suitable outdoor clothing.
