Drumcor residents explore Ulster history

RESIDENTS of Helm Housing’s Drumcor Court sheltered housing scheme in Rathcoole recently completed a social history project as part of the upcoming celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Ulster Covenant.

Topics covered during the four-week course included the Balmoral Review, the signing of the Covenant, the 36th Ulster Division at the Somme, the formation of Northern Ireland and more. The project was funded by Newtownabbey Borough Council and delivered by Paul Donnelly, a community history tutor. During the sessions, members of the local Rathcoole Community Policing Team also attended.

Phil Hamilton from Rathcoole Community Support and Development Partnership said the course had been a great success.

“It was great to see our senior citizens enjoying the community based history course. Many of the participants could relate to some of the topics as they heard older family members talking about some of the topics when they were young. Now they have learnt the milestone history events that were happening back then that shaped Northern Ireland.

“I would like to thank our funder Claire Fox from Newtownabbey Borough Council Good Relations, Sheena Storm, the Helm Fold Co-ordinator, tutor Paul Donnelly and most importantly our participants,” he commented.
