Exhibition celebrates panto and show business

Entitled ‘There’s No Business Like Show Business’, the exhibition features an array of artefacts, films and photographs that provide an insight into the wealth of facilities and groups which have kept the residents of Lurgan and afar entertained over the past century.

The exhibition will include the story of the much-missed cinemas of the town, such as Foster’s Picture House in Carnegie Street. The proud theatrical history of the town will be recounted, with a fascinating display focusing on the celebrated Lurgan Operatic Society, whose 1961 production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘The Gondoliers’ would win the prestigious ‘International Trophy’ at the Waterford Festival of International Light Opera.

The sounds of Irish Showbands, such as ‘The Clipper Carlton’ and Lurgan’s own ‘The Troubadours’ are sure to rekindle memories of dance hall romances for many local residents. While local impresario Sean McMullan’s role in attracting many stars, such as Frank Carson, to the Town Hall is also highlighted.

The exhibition will be open until, Monday, November 28 in Waterside House on Oxford Island, 10am to 4pm. It will then move to Lough Neagh Discovery Centre on Oxford Island, opening from Monday, December 3 to Monday, December 31, 10am to 4pm. Admission is free.
