The beautiful Victoria Court nursing home has already had substantial refurbishment work done to create luxury living for residents.

With a high level of staffing and a video call system to keep relatives in touch, it’s a state-of-the-art approach that also manages to feel like home.

Many families will have been supporting their relatives at home during the pandemic, but may now be looking for more structured care home support, for short term respite, day visits or longer term care.

Victoria Court in Carrickfergus, Antrim is set over two storeys, with 1.7 acres of accessible gardens.

The recent refurbishment of the existing building are the initial stages of a major modernisation, plans have been approved to extend and enhance the home in all areas. There will be eight residents’ lounges, four dining areas, private entertainment space for when families visit, a state-of-the-art treatment room, a leisure room and two new enclosed landscape gardens. Adding to the existing outdoor activities will be a new boules area.

One of the biggest advantages of Victoria Court is the 24-hour nursing care. Highly trained and dedicated staff can provide palliative care, day care, respite stays and convalescent trips … the service can be adapted to meet your relative’s individual needs.

During lockdown’s restricted visiting periods the team at Victoria Court have organised regular video calls between residents and their friends and families, which has helped with mental health and wellbeing. Super-fast broadband throughout the home means silver surfers can enjoy 24/7 internet access on their own devices if they want it.

To further prevent isolation the carers have worked hard to keep everyone entertained and active during this period. Things like a therapist-led daily reminiscence group, and activities personalised to each resident’s own likes were offered.

Looking ahead, the Victoria Court team are planning to re-start everyday events, like garden parties, day trips, shopping trips, coffee mornings, music and dances, once conditions allow.

Accommodation

The nursing home currently provides living for 43 residents with nine rooms having en-suite facilities. Following the upgrade the home will have 53 rooms, all with full wetroom en-suite facilities. The upgrade will provide hybrid living environment, consisting of large self-contained studio assisted living suites and single assisted living suites.

All new and upgraded bedrooms will have private wetrooms and ancillary facilities that go far beyond the national legislation and recommendations for size and safety standards.

Robert Milligan, head of resident well-being at Victoria Court says the new accommodation has been designed with the residents in mind: “These upgrades will provide a positive impact on the harmony, wellness and happiness of our residents for years to come.”

Healthcare first

To further enhance existing infection control regimes, Victoria Court installed air sterilisation units throughout the home, and new processes to ensure multiple layers of protection for residents and staff. This, of course, includes PPE where required, and enhanced cleaning processes.
