Ghosts in the Glens

As well as the public events, storyteller Steve Lally will be visiting St Mary’s Primary School, Cushendall on Friday 26th October.

As part of the Ghosts in the Glens Festival there is also ghost story writing competition for schools as well as a ghost trail around shops and businesses in the village of Cushendall.

The festival kicks off with a ceili in the Glens Hotel, Cushendall on Friday 26th October, with ghost stories added into the usual mix of traditional music for which the Glens area is famous. Organised by the Glens Comhaltas this event will also feature storyteller Steve Lally, well known from his work with the Armagh Rhymers, who will tell stories to send a shiver up the spine.

Friday night late night scary stories in McCollam’s Bar from 10pm will not be for the faint-hearted! Yorkshire storyteller Rod Dimbleby will share a few tales to chill the blood.

On Saturday 27th October Cushendall Library is the venue for “Non-scary stories for under-8’s” while older children can attend an afternoon Spooktacular Happening to be held in Cushendall Sailing and Boating Club – fancy dress will add to the atmosphere.

Acclaimed London based storyteller Kate Corkery, a native of County Cork, will be telling stories at both these events.

Those adults who want to improve their telling of ghost stories can attend a workshop on Saturday morning 27th October. This will be given by festival director and storyteller Liz Weir at Ballyeamon Barn.

The older generation will have their chance to sit back an relax at a public storytelling event in Knockmoy Fold Cushendall at 2pm on Saturday 27th with Kate Murphy from Portrush.

This will be followed by a storyswap at McCollams Bar from 3 till 5 when anyone can try their hand at sharing stories.

A major event is the big concert of storytelling and music in the Parish Centre Cushendall at 8 30 on Saturday 27th when acclaimed singer songwriter Ben Sands will be the special guest. Stories and songs are natural partners and this is an evening not to be missed.

Those who want to start Sunday off with some fresh air should join Steve Lally and the members of the Walk the Glens group for a story walk starting at Laragh Lodge at 11 am and winding up round the famous Glenariff waterfalls. After this people are encouraged to join The Feast of Fearful ales where pumpkin soup and stories will be served up from 1pm.

The festival draws to a close with an informal session at Ballyeamon Barn at 8 pm on Sunday 28th when singer songwriter Miss Paula Flynn, a native of Forkhill, will join other musicians and storytellers.
